WordPress Website Development - The Right Way and the Wrong Way

WordPress logo.The Right Way

As 'bespoke' web designers, we create websites that are unique to our clients. With WordPress that means designing a custom theme - a series of individually coded templates - based on distinct, client-approved visual design concepts.

WordPress 'Core' is extremely flexible and adaptable, and doesn't require 3rd party plugins be installed to extend most functionality - that can be done with custom-code, tailored to meet our client's needs. To avoid bloat, we keep plugin usage to an absolute minimum.

That of course doesn't mean plugins should never be used - for ecommerce, membership management, booking systems - it can make sense, but we only use those that are secure, stable and optimised for speed.

WordPress logo.The Wrong Way

A vast contributor network has grown up around the WordPress CMS. This unfortunately, allows people, without any web developer expertise, to 'make websites' and call themselves a 'WordPress developer'.

They'll select a generic, pre-designed WordPress 'Theme' and install numerous plugins for even the most basic functionality. Many may even install a completely unnecessary, paid for, proprietary 'Page Builder', making much of what makes WordPress great, redundant!

The resulting website will be slow and bloated, potentially insecure and unstable, with the design looking derivative and unimaginative.

Even WordPress itself suggests this is not how websites, using their platform, should be 'developed'.
